You can't always expect to get every detail of a person's death by going to your local statistics office, but the closest thing to a credible source of information to help you establish your genealogy research or family tree documentation for people who died within the state of Colorado is the Colorado Department of Health and Environment. The state of Colorado has death certificates of almost all the deceased within the state after 1900. For death certificates before that time you can take your chances at the state vital records board – they might have some information on the person you are looking for there.

If you are looking to get instant access to our huge database of Colorado death records, certificates and obituaries, please fill the form at the top of this page.

Generally, however, you can purchase most certificates, include death certificates, at the Vital Records Section of the Colorado Department of Health and Environment. Methods of ordering include by fax, mail or online. You can also apply for the certificate in person.

Start Your preliminary search by filling the the form at the top of the page and see if there's a record available for your query.

Generally, what you will need is a government-issued photo ID such as a driver's license or a passport to identify yourself.

Certificates cost $17.75 for the first copy but the additional copies you will request for at the same time will cost $10 each. You will also be charged for the convenience of applying via phone, fax, or credit card online, depending upon the case. Expedited Shipping also costs extra. Just remember that whenever you pay for your application of a death certificate, make sure you don't send cash through mail. Only send payment via check or money order as advised.
