MAINE Public Death Records

When you want to look for all sorts of vital records, including death records, that involved records of events which took place in the state of Maine, then you want to go to the Vital Records Office of the Office of Health Data and Program Management. This office collects records of deaths within the state from the year 1892 to the present. Those records dated from 1923 up to now are filed at the Vital Records, while records from 1892-1922 are housed at Maine State Archives.

The office is located at 244 Water Street, Augusta. The Vital Records office accepts walk-in application for these vital records and the processing and turnaround time will take at most 24 hours. For release you can either opt to pick it up at the office when it's ready or you can ask to have the certificate mailed to you.

If you want you can also mail a written request to the office and send along with it the money order payment or check. Also, you have to include an already stamped long enveloped addressed to yourself along with your request.

MAINE Death Certificates

The last method of getting a death certificate from the Vital Records Office is to avail of the services of VitalChek Network by dialing toll-free 1-877-523-2659. You will be guided through an automated telephone system. You have to pay via credit card.

In either case, when asking for a death certificate from the Maine Vital Records, you need to supply the following information: Name of the person whose death certificate you are requesting, the date of his or her death, the city or town where the death occurred, your relationship with the deceased, your contact number which you could be reached during the day, and a check or money order payable to “Treasurer – State of Maine”.
