Registration of deaths that happened within the state of New Mexico started in 1919, when the Vital Records and health Statistics was created for that very purpose. This really helped the efficient collection and access of vital records, which was originally handled by different and varying institutions. State laws of New Mexico provide that death certificates are restricted access records, and that these records are only accessible by the immediate family members of the deceased or specific persons who can prove that they have a legal interest over the acquisition of the death record, such as a third party to an insurance claim.
