SOUTH CAROLINA Public Death Records

Requesting for a South Carolina death record should be made at the proper office tasked to file and issue them. Generally, it is the Vital Records Office of the state that handles most of the archiving of the death records since 1915.

However, you can also get a copy of a death record at the local health department where such recorded death took place. The list below contains more details on which death certificates are present for what state:

  • The Charleston Count Health Department has death records from 1821.
  • Florence City has ledger entries of deaths from 1895 to 1914 in its local health department.
  • Newberry City also has ledger entries of deaths from the late 1800's in its health department.

But if the death records are beyond 50 years, you can find them at the South Carolina Department of Archives and History. These records have become public record and can be accessed by anyone.

SOUTH CAROLINA Death Certificates

Generally you can place a request for a death certificate from South Carolina either by mail or by walk-in application. For mail-in applications, you must fill out the proper application form (which can be found at the Department of Health's website) and complete it. Attach the necessary identification requirements (valid government-issued photo ID or alternative documents) along with a check or money order payable to South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control or the SCDHEC.

Send the application to this address:

Office of Vital Records
SC DHEC
2600 Bull Street
Columbia, SC 29201

You can visit the same office during office hours for walk-in applications and provide the information required above. Make sure that in both cases you are able to provide the necessary information to track the record as well as your personal information, relationship with the deceased, and the reason for your requesting the document.

The initial copy of the certificate cost $12, and additional copies ordered at the same time cost $3 each. Fees might change without prior notice so make sure you keep yourself updated by dialing (803) 898-3630 to check with the current fees prior to making a request.
