TEXAS Public Death Records

The state of Texas has two methods of applying for death certificates, namely online and offline. Both services are handled by the Vital Statistics office of the Department of State Health Services of Texas.

The office has records of deaths which took place since 1903 to the present. However, records pertaining to deaths which took place within the last 90 days may not yet be available and may take longer to process. Death records are generally confidential documents for 25 years. After that they become public documents.

Those who wish to place orders online take the time to fill the form at the top or bottom of this webpage to perform a preliminary search of our databse. This is by far the fastest way to get access to Texas death certificates and other related information.

TEXAS Death Certificates

Otherwise, you have to make your request offline. To do this you have to fill out an application form and be eligible for such request. If you are not an immediate family member of the deceased and you are asking for a copy of a record not older than 25 years then you have to provide proof of any legal interest over that certificate. You must also provide the same proof of identification above, or else your request will not be processed.

You can either visit the office at 1100 West 49th Street , Austin , TX 78756 between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM from Mondays through Fridays or apply for the copy in person, or you can mail your application to that same address.

Each first certified copy costs $20 while additional copies requested at the same time cost $3 each. Walk-in applicants normally get their requests processed within 30 minutes to 2 hours while mail-in requests are processed in 6-8 weeks. Checks or money orders used to pay for the fees in both cases must be made payable to the Department of State Health Services. Cash is only accepted with walk-in applications.
