VERMONT Public Death Records

Registrations of vital records all over the state of Vermont started way back in 1857. This was when the General Assembly passed a law providing that all towns should keep track of births, marriages, and deaths and submit them to the Secretary of State.

Death records have become a very important tool for conducting medical and scientific studies (such as that of epidemics). Certified copies of these documents are also indispensable to the completion of various legal and vital transactions such as insurance claims, inheritance, etc.

For all these reasons and more, the Vital Records of the Department of Health continue to maintain the filing and issuance of records on deaths that took place within the past five years. Documents beyond this lapse of time are kept with and issued by the Vermont State Archives and Records Administration.
