WYOMING Public Death Records

The Department of Health in the State of Wyoming is the office that files and issues vital records and certificates for events which occur within the state. This includes death records.

Death records which have lapsed 50 years since they were filed become public record and are available at the Wyoming State Archives. However, records which have not yet become public records are kept with the Vital Records Office and are only accessible by certain persons. These persons are the immediate family members of the deceased, the legal representative of the deceased or their family, and banks, insurance companies, or other institutions or persons who need the certificate to be able to acquire death benefit.

WYOMING Death Certificates

Those applying for a copy of a death must supply the following information, namely (1) the full name of the deceased, the date and city or county where the death took place, the applicant's relationship to the deceased, the reason why the copy is being requested, and the address where the document should be mailed.

The applicant must also include a photocopy of any of the following for identification: government-issued ID card, driver's license, passport, or a notarized signature of the applicant. Make sure that the copies are enlarged to ensure legibility.

Each certificate costs $10. However, it will cost $13 if date of death can't be specified and a five year search has to be conducted. This covers the search for five years plus a copy of the certificate if found.

When making the request by mail, make sure you enclose the payment. This should be in the form of a money order or a personalized check and must be made payable to Vital Statistics Services. Mail-in applications must also include a self-addressed and stamped envelope. Send the application to the address below:

Vital Statistics Services
Hathaway Building
Cheyenne, WY 82002
(307) 777-7591

Please take note that while you can also acquire death certificates not filed in the office of the Vital Statistics Services at the Wyoming State Archives, the process for making that request may be different from the procedure discussed above.
